Cabinet man Lt. Mild Bill here. I thought I’d fill ya’ll in on the first custom build of 2012. OUN (http://unevensouls.com/oun/) comissioned me to build this pair of vented 1×12 speaker cabs for half of his far out quadraphonic amp/effect setup.

Since these cabinets are for his ‘rhythm guitar’ rig, OUN wanted something with an extended low end. Hauling around enough amp for 4 players, the cabs had to be compact and portable. After considering a number of arrangements he decided on a pair of 1×12 cabinets based on the classic Electro-Voice TL series, specifically the TL806. This bass-reflex (vented) design includes a removable port cover to convert the cabs to an infinite baffle (sealed) configuration with the twist of two phillips head screws. The box boasts a resonant frequency (fB) of 75 Hz with its lowest usable frequency (fLL) at 62 Hz.

For drivers we went with the Weber Michigan 12s with aluminum domes. Not only can these speakers handle 100w a piece, but they’re voiced very similar to the EVM 12Ls that these cabs were designed about 30 years ago. A few features that set these cabs apart from stock Steamboat cabs are the reinforced metal grill and extra head-style surface-mounted handles for easy transport.

This was a really fun project to work on; I greatly value any chance to recreate time-proven designs.

Get on the ‘boat!
